BACK TO IT!

It’s that time of year again.

If you’ve not already bought your kids backpack you’ll certainly have it on your to-buy list.
Half the weight seems to be in the school bag itself, even before it’s loaded up with books and P.E. kit.

Your kids will often beg and plead for the coolest brand name backpack at the start of term, but you should consider more than just appearance before you buy one.

To avoid your kids backpack becoming quite literally a pain in the back or neck, take note of the following:

• Look for a backpack with two straps so the weight is evenly distributed.
• Discourage your child from slinging their two-strap backpack over one shoulder only,
to "look cool at school".
• One-strap backpacks will be more likely to cause back pain, and particularly neck and shoulder pain.
• Overloaded or incorrectly worn backpacks can cause muscle strain, irritation, negative postural changes and injury,
• Don't wear the backpack any lower than the hollow of the lower back; it should always sit above the bottom.
• Place all heavy items at the base of the pack, close to the spine, for a better distribution of the weight.
• Bags with padded shoulder straps are also recommended, and it's important to use waist straps, if available, to bring weight close to the body.
